CalmOps Community Guidelines and Values

Our Community Philosophy

Every great technical resource is built on a foundation of community trust. At CalmOps, we strive to create an environment where developers of all backgrounds and experience levels feel welcome to learn, share, and grow together.

Technology has the power to bring people together across boundaries. Our community celebrates this potential. We believe that diverse perspectives make our content richer and more useful for everyone. Different backgrounds lead to different approaches, and those differences drive innovation.

We expect all community members to treat each other with respect and professionalism. Disagreement is natural in technical discussions, but it should remain constructive. Critique of ideas should never become personal attacks. We value the substance of contributions over the status of those who make them.

Core Values

Quality Over Quantity

We prioritize comprehensive, accurate content over publishing volume. Each article undergoes research and review to ensure it provides genuine value. We prefer thoroughly-explained topics over surface-level treatments.

This extends to community contributions. Thoughtful comments that add to discussions are more valuable than many superficial responses. Technical corrections with evidence are more helpful than vague complaints.

Inclusive Language

Technology has historically excluded certain groups. We consciously work to use inclusive language and highlight contributions from diverse voices. We believe everyone deserves opportunity in our profession.

Our content should be accessible to all qualified readers regardless of background. We avoid jargon where simpler alternatives exist. We explain concepts from foundational principles when introducing new topics.

Constructive Feedback

Criticism is essential to improving both code and documentation. We welcome constructive feedback on our content. The best feedback explains what’s wrong, why it matters, and how it could be improved.

We apply the same principle to how we address others. When we offer criticism, we do so in ways that help the recipient improve. We focus on the work, not the person.

Attribution and Originality

We respect intellectual property and expect the same from our community. Content shared should be original or properly attributed. Code examples should acknowledge their sources.

We believe in giving credit where it’s due. The software development community builds on collective knowledge. We acknowledge those who contributed to our understanding, whether through direct contribution or foundational work that made our own contributions possible.

What We Expect From Contributors

Technical Accuracy

Content shared should be technically accurate to the best of the contributor’s knowledge. Sources should be cited when referencing others’ work. Speculation should be clearly labeled as such.

We all make mistakes. When errors are identified, we correct them promptly and gratefully. No one should feel embarrassed about learning or improving.

Respectful Discourse

Discussions should remain professional and respectful. Personal attacks, harassment, and discriminatory language are strictly prohibited. We remove content that violates these principles.

Disagreements about technical approaches are welcome. Different perspectives lead to better solutions. But disagreements should focus on ideas, not on the people holding them.

No Spam or Self-Promotion

Our community spaces are for genuine technical discussion. Excessive self-promotion, spam, and irrelevant content detract from community value. We remove such content to maintain signal quality.

Sharing your own work is fine when it’s relevant to discussions. The key is contributing to conversations, not just broadcasting your content.

Moderation Principles

Our moderation team works to maintain community standards without suppressing legitimate discussion. We err on the side of allowing controversial but respectful debates. We remove content that clearly violates our guidelines.

Moderation decisions are not always obvious. Sometimes reasonable people disagree about what’s appropriate. We try to be consistent and transparent about our reasoning. When we’re wrong, we correct course.

We welcome feedback on moderation decisions. If you believe we’ve made an error, please reach out. We value community input in improving our processes.

Getting Help

If you experience or witness behavior that violates our guidelines, please let us know. We take all reports seriously and respond promptly.

We protect those who report bad behavior. Retaliation against reporters is itself a violation that results in immediate removal. Your safety and comfort matters to us.

For urgent issues, contact us directly through our contact page. We respond to all legitimate concerns.

Conclusion

Building a positive community requires ongoing effort from everyone involved. We appreciate those who contribute constructively and hold each other to high standards.

The software development profession is stronger when we work together. CalmOps exists to support that collaboration. Thank you for being part of our community and helping us create something valuable together.
