Common Transitions

Sentence variety(structure)

Using a variety of sentence structures will make your writing seem advanced and enjoyable to read. you may be writing sentences that are grammatically correct but boring because they all sound and look the same.

Compound sentence and Complex sentence

A compound sentence is used to give equal weight to two closely realatd ideas.

The two complete sentences in a compound sentence are usually connected by comma and a joining or coordinating word(and, but, for, or, nor, so, yet) FANBOYS.

  • Greg worked on the engine for three hours, but the car still wouldn’t start.
  • Bananas were on sale this week, so I bought a bunch for the children’s lunches.
  • We laced up our roller blades, and then we moved cautiously onto the rink.

A complex sentence is used to emphasize one idea over another.

  • use an occasional question.

Semicolons(;)

Semicolons are use to connect two sentences which are about related ideas.

Semicolons (;) separate independent clauses that are related in meaning, and they separate items in a list when those items themselves are long or include commas. For example, this summary could say “Semicolons are useful; they show that clauses are related in meaning.”

Semicolon is similar to full stop. Use it shows that your ideas that before a semicolon and after the semicolon are connected.
